BAEwatch: Madison Beer

The ‘As She Pleases’ singer is the muse for our girl power-charged editorial.

They say that success is made up of talent, hard work and a little bit of luck. In the case of Madison Beer, this may very well be true. Born to be a songstress, her captivating voice was discovered by Justin Bieber when she was just 13, and was made known to the world after the Purpose star tweeted a video of her covering Etta James’ “At Last.”

It’s been almost six years, and now at the age of 18, Madison still proves to be a social media powerhouse. Garnering over 10 million followers on Instagram, she’s one of the today’s most sought-after newcomers in the music industry. Fans everywhere have been longing to see and hear more from the singer, and as promised, Madison now finally releases her debut EP entitled As She Pleases. Featuring addictive tracks like “Dead” and “Say It To My Face,” the seven-track record marks a significant chapter in the artist’s career, which is definitely going to become even more exciting in years to come.

Echoing the theme of As She Pleases, we’ve teamed up with videographer Rosanna Peng and photographer Badboi to capture the songbird in a girl power-charged editorial. Donning pieces from denim knitwear brand Knorts and Hubble Studio, Madison serves as the enigmatic muse for our latest BAEwatch feature.

Hit play above to watch the mesmerizing visual, and read on for our exclusive interview with the rising star.

Let’s talk about your debut EP As She Pleases. What is the meaning behind the title?

I like the title a lot because it says so many things about me. I do as I please, but more than that, I didn’t say “as I please,” I said “as she pleases” — like female empowerment and being like, “You can do whatever you want. You’re a girl. You’re a boss.” I know girls are always belittled and second to men a lot, not taken as seriously and not paid as much, et cetera. I wanted it to be as she pleases. You can do whatever you want when you put your mind to it. You don’t have to be scared of anything or do anything you don’t want to do.

I didn’t say “as I please,” I said “as she pleases” — like female empowerment and being like, “You can do whatever you want. You’re a girl. You’re a boss.”

How long have you been working on this project for? How do you feel to finally be able to share this record with your fans?

I actually made some of the songs years ago, like “Fools” I made three years ago, or two years ago. I wanted to just not hold back with anything and wanted it to come through my heart and be all of me. I didn’t want it to be anything different and that’s not me. I wanted my Instagram to match my sound, which might sound ridiculous, but people would look at my Instagram and be like, this is not my old music or melodies. They’d be like, “What? This is Madison Beer singing this?” It was just not me. I wanted it to be a true representation of me and the things I like. Like, Fight Club is my favorite movie. “Teenager in Love,” I love ’50s music. There are a lot of aspects that are really true to me and who I am and the things I really like, which is what I went into it thinking.

Do you have a personal favorite from the EP?

It’s really hard to say because I clearly love them all, but I’d have to say “Tyler Durden” is my favorite.

You’re turning 19 next month. What are some goals you wish to achieve during your last year as a teen?

I just really want to continue with my music and do what I love. I’m looking forward to meeting fans on tour, who always inspire me.

Do you have plans to collaborate with Justin Bieber on new music in the future?

If the opportunity presents itself and it feels right, sure, I’d love to.

Who’s your biggest role model?

My mom.

Judging from your Instagram, you seem to have an obsession for sneakers. What’s your favorite pair of kicks at the moment?

Air Force 1‘s are usually my go-to. But I love me some Vans and Converse, too.

How would you describe your personal style? And do you have any favorite designers?

I’m all about comfort. I’m half girly and half tomboy. I like mixing high-end labels with really affordable brands and vintage. Sticking to one style or brand is boring. I like to mix it up and keep it interesting.
